David H. Chestnut, M.D.

David H. Chestnut, M.D., is a graduate of Samford University and the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He obtained his residency training in both anesthesiology and obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center. In 1984, Dr. Chestnut joined the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and for three years he practiced both anesthesiology and obstetrics and gynecology. In 1987, he began to devote his clinical practice exclusively to anesthesiology, with an emphasis on obstetric anesthesia. While at the University of Iowa, Dr. Chestnut developed an NIH-funded laboratory model for the study of the maternal and fetal compensatory responses to various stresses (e.g., sympathectomy, hemorrhage, hypoxia). His clinical research focused on the effect of epidural analgesia on obstetric outcome. In 1992, he was named Vice-Chair for Administration in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Iowa.
In 1994, Dr. Chestnut was named Alfred Habeeb Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology, and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). During his tenure as Chair of Anesthesiology at UAB, Dr. Chestnut helped lead this department to national and international prominence in the specialty of anesthesiology.
In 2005, Dr. Chestnut was appointed as Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Dean for the Western Academic Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also serves as the Edwin L. Overholt Director of Medical Education at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse.
Dr. Chestnut is a diplomate of both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is the editor of Obstetric Anesthesia: Principles and Practice, which is widely regarded as the leading textbook in obstetric anesthesia. The third edition of this textbook was published in 2004. For 12 years Dr. Chestnut served as a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Anesthesiology. Currently, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Year Book of Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Dr. Chestnut is both a Director and President of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). He is an ABA representative to both the Anesthesiology In-Training Council and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Chestnut has served as President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP), and for three years he served as the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ liaison to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
