Carl J. Getto, MD
Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs
Carl J. Getto, MD, assumed the position of associate dean for hospital affairs at UW School of Medicine and Public Health and senior vice president for medical affairs at UW Hospital and Clinics in November 2001. He also is appointed as a professor of psychiatry. He previously served as director of clinical affairs at UW Hospital and Clinics from 1985-1993. He started at UW Hospital and Clinics in 1979 as assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and associate professor from 1986-92. Getto also served as acting chair in the Department of Psychiatry from 1989-91. He held the role of acting dean of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health from 1991-92 and vice dean from 1992-93. From 1979-83 he served as director of psychiatric consultation services at UW Health and director of psychiatric consultation and liaison at Middleton Veterans Affairs Hospital. Getto also served as director of the pain treatment program at UW Health. Immediately prior to coming to UW Hospital and Clinics Authority and UW School of Medicine and Public Health, Getto was dean and provost at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine from 1994-2001. He serves as chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education, and he has been appointed to the Interdisciplinary Education Task Force of the Institute of Medicine. Getto completed medical school at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and did his residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center. He received an MBA from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University in Chicago.
