Charles Russell Bardeen Dean of the Medical School, 1907-1935
Modeled the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's overall structure of teaching, care and research from Johns Hopkins. Began the Preceptorship Program, an apprenticeship program that continues to this day.
Bardeen established the four-year medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and created the Wisconsin General Hospital. |

William Shainline Middleton Dean of the Medical School, 1935-1955
Middleton was a teacher, clinician and researcher who nurtured the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's groundbreaking anesthesiology department and began cancer research programs. Middleton was a military man who also shepherded the UW School of Medicine and Public Health through World War II, and was the influential mentor to hundreds of medical students. |

John Zimmerman Bowers Dean of the Medical School, 1955-1961
Dean Zimmerman Bowers oversaw development of the Department of Medical Genetics (the first of its kind in a U.S. medical school); school received over $4 million in gifts and grants by 1961 and establishment of the University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association. Overall enrollment increased by 25 percent on his watch.

Eichman revised the MD curriculum; oversaw construction of the William S. Middleton Health Science Library building; established the Blue Bus project; minority enrollment increased. |

Henry C. Pitot Acting Dean of the Medical School, 1971-1973
Pitot oversaw the establishment of the Department of Family Medicine. During his term the University of Wisconsin was awarded one of eight comprehensive cancer centers by National Cancer Institute and female enrollment increased. |

Philip Farrell Dean of the Medical School, 1994-2006
While Farrell served as dean, Mission Aligned and Management Allocation (MAMA) was developed to better align academic funds with faculty and staff efforts. He was responsible for establishing the Health Sciences Learning Center, the Integrated Research Center (now Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research), and changed the name and program emphasis from UW Medical School to the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. |
