Interdisciplinary Research Complex

University of Wisconsin Medical School began construction in August 2005 on the $134 million Interdisciplinary Research Complex (IRC). The building is designed to encourage unique gatherings of scientists from different disciplines to address urgent health problems of common concern.

The research complex, to be completed in 2008, is being constructed adjacent to UW Hospital and Clinics immediately northwest of the Health Sciences Learning Center. Close proximity to the hospital will allow new scientific discoveries to move rapidly from research laboratories to clinical care settings.

The three-tower complex will be completed in separate phases. The first phase will consist of a five-story tower atop a three-story base.

Cancer research laboratories will be the anchor of the IRC’s first tower. Neuroscience and cardiovascular research also will be featured in phase one, as will work on stem cells and regenerative medicine. In addition, molecular medicine will be a major thrust of the research taking place in the building.

The IRC architect of record is the Zimmerman Design Group of Milwaukee; the design architect is Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. (HOK) of St. Louis, Missouri. The Boldt Company The Boldt Company of Appleton, Wis., serves as construction manager for the project. The UW Medical School Facilities Management Department is overseeing the construction.
