Associate Dean for Continuing Professional Development

George C. Mejicano received his medical degree from the University of Illinois in 1990. After finishing his post-graduate clinical training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, he became board certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. His clinical interests include travel medicine, antibiotic resistance, and emerging infectious diseases. In 2000, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Internist Award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American College of Physicians. From 2003-2004, he served on the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Infectious Diseases of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2007, he won the Public Health Leadership Award from the Madison – Dane County Public Health Department for his efforts to control multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Wisconsin.

In 1996, Mejicano received a Master of Science degree in adult and continuing education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His educational interests include needs assessment and educational outcomes and he has done research on physician assessment and how education can lead to improvements in medical practice. In 2002, he was awarded the W.C. Felch / Wyeth-Ayerst Award for Research in Continuing Medical Education (CME) by the Alliance for CME.

Mejicano currently serves as the Associate Dean for Continuing Professional Development and is the Director of the Office of Continuing Professional Development in Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He has given numerous national and international presentations related to continuing education. At present, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education and he just finished a term as a member of the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

Mejicano is the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the 1998 and 2003 Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards, the 1999 Department of Medicine House Staff Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 2003 Medical School Dean’s Teaching Award, the 2003 Alliant Energy - Underkofler Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin System, and the 2007 Outstanding Pre-Clinical Teaching Award.
