Susan E Skochelak, MD, MPH
Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Susan Skochelak, MD, MPH, is the senior associate dean for academic affairs at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and a professor of family medicine. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Michigan and completing a family practice residency at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Skochelak was selected as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and completed a master's degree in public health in epidemiology and preventive medicine.

Skochelak joined the faculty at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in 1986. Her primary work has been in developing new models for medical education, including community-based educational experiences, interdisciplinary courses, and communication and patient care management skills. She led the development of a four-year longitudinal generalist curriculum for medical students at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and was the principal investigator for two prestigious national medical education demonstration grants. Wisconsin was one of only two medical schools to have received grant awards for both the Interdisciplinary Generalist Curriculum Project and the Undergraduate Medical Education for the 21st century.

Skochelak has served on a number of national medical education advisory committees and as an educational consultant for more than a dozen medical schools and private foundations. She has served as the director of the Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) System, the chairperson of the Consortium for Primary Care in Wisconsin and as a member of the governor's Rural Health Development Council. She has been recognized for her educational achievements through the UW Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished Service Award from the State Medical Society of Wisconsin and the Patient Care Award for Innovations in Medical Education.
