Jeffrey A. Stearns, MD
Associate Dean for Medical Education of the Milwaukee Academic Campus
Dr. Stearns graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1974 and then completed a family practice residency at Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington, New Jersey. In 1977, he joined Tri-County Family Medicine, based in Dansville, New York. His primary practice setting was in a converted fire hall in Wayland, New York. As a rural family doctor, his practice comprised the full range of primary care medicine—from obstetrics and pediatrics to home visits to elderly patients.
In 1984, Dr. Stearns relocated to Rockford, Illinois where he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, following four years of suburban practice. He served as director of the Rockton Health Center, an outpatient teaching practice where medical students participate in a two-and-a-half-year longitudinal, ambulatory, primary care experience. In the early 1990’s the College adopted a rural mission, creating the Rural Medical Education Program (Illinois RMED). Dr. Stearns took over the leadership of this program in 1996, and spearheaded the development of a network of collaborating rural hospitals, family medicine preceptors and community sponsors to facilitate the four month-long rural clerkships for the 15-20 fourth-year RMED students annually. RMED also developed a selective admissions component to assure that students predisposed to rural practice are admitted to the program. Since 1997, RMED has graduated over 150 physicians, 75 percent now practice in Illinois, nearly 90 percent in primary care specialties and most practice in towns of less than 20,000.
Since 2000, Dr. Stearns has served first as Associate Chairman of Family Medicine and then as the Associate Dean of the Milwaukee Academic Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also serves as director of medical education for Aurora Health Care, overseeing extensive undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education offerings for the largest healthcare system in the state. The University of Wisconsin recently established the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine (WARM), and Dr. Stearns serves on the advisory board for this exciting new rural physician development program. From 2000-2004, he served as the project manager for a federal contract awarded to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine to develop a Family Medicine Curricular Resource. He is published in the areas of ambulatory and rural medical education.
