Teaching Program
Teaching Program

Overview The Medical Education Development and Leadership (MEDAL) program offered in 2007-2008 year is the MEDAL-Teaching program. The program is designed for faculty in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and related programs. Completion of all requirements for a program yields a certificate of completion. Faculty who participate without completing requirements or with absences will receive a certificate of participation.

Goal
The goal of the Teaching Program is to help faculty explore and enhance their skills in teaching and facilitating learning. Topics and skills addressed are important for faculty members who teach in the classroom, laboratory, clinic or hospital setting. Outcomes
Each MEDAL participant will gain knowledge and skills at the monthly workshops and will use them to design and implement a MEDAL project. The program also encourages additional outcomes (eg, preparing a teaching portfolio) that will be useful for promotion as teachers.

Application
Enrollment is limited, but most applicants will be accomodated. Applications must be submitted by August 29, 2007. Applications require a curriculum vitae and the chairperson's signature. Applications may be sent to 4284 HSLC or faxed to 608-262-2327. For further information about the program content, an application form and MEDAL brochure, visit: http://www.fammed.wisc.edu/faculty/medal.html or email Craig Gjerde at clgjerde@wisc.edu

Participation
A maximum of 15 participants will be selected for this program. While the program addresses fundamental teaching skills, participation is open to all faculty and the class benefits from the expertise of experienced teachers. To be eligible for participation, faculty must apply and provide a signature from their department chair in which released time of at least four hours a month is committed for attending seminars. Participants should be willing to attend classes, participate in class discussions, complete minimal monthly class homework, complete their selected course project and participate in program evaluations. Learning Methods
The MEDAL-Teaching Skills program will consist of nine modules. Program participants will address each module through:
  • Preparatory activities (0-1 hour)
  • Participation in a seminar featuring discussion of the topics and practice applying skills (4 hours a month)
  • Completion of "homework" (0-1 hour)

This program creates a community of learners who educate each other through the discussion of class and project ideas.
