Ralph Hawley Distinguished Service Award - WMAA
The award is conferred on an alumnus who has made outstanding contributions to the local community through medical practice, teaching, research, or other humanitarian activities.
Louis C. Bernhardt, M.D.
Louis Bernhardt received his undergraduate degree from Oberlin College in Oberlin Ohio and his M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed an internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a general surgery residency at University Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Bernhardt practiced at Dean Medical Center in Madison for his entire career, and after retiring in 2002, he became the Surgical Education Coordinator for St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison and a consultant for Verity Medical Inc. and Next Generation Clinical Research.
Dr. Bernhardt has been teaching in the Wisconsin Department of Surgery since becoming an instructor during his residency in 1968. Throughout the years he has also served as the President of the Medical Alumni Association and the Wisconsin Surgical Society, and as a member of the University of Wisconsin Admissions Committee. He has held numerous other state and local positions.
Dr. Bernhardt serves on the Hospice Care Foundation Board. In addition, he serves as co-chair of the “Promise to Keep” capital campaign for Hospice Care. He also works with the Benevolent Specialists Project which is dedicated to providing quality secondary (specialty) health care to uninsured and low-income patients.
