Sigurd Sivertson Medical Education Award - WMAA



The Medical School, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Medical Alumni
Association has created the Sigurd Sivertson Medical Education Award to recognize the contributions of Dr. Sigurd E. Sivertson to the education of medical students at the University of Wisconsin. It further recognizes the contributions made by hundreds of physicians in communities throughout Wisconsin who provide quality health care to Wisconsin citizens while providing educational opportunities for medical students through community-based service.


Arlyn A. Koeller, M.D.

Arlyn Koeller earned his M.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1961 and completed an internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin. He practices at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, Wisconsin where he has been since 1962. He also practices at St. Luke’s Hospital of Duluth’s Chequamegon Clinic in Ashland. During his career he has been the physician supervisor of the county public health department, the supervisor of county jail care and the chair of the hospital’s development committee. Dr. Koeller has been a preceptor with the School of Medicine and Public Health since 1974 and has hosted over 200 Wisconsin fourth year medical students. He was awarded the Max Fox Preceptor Award in 2000 by the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association and the Badger of the Year Award by the UW Alumni Association in 2005.

Additionally, Dr. Koeller is active in his community, having served as the school team physician for the high school and Northland College and as the school health office advisor. He has taught EMT courses and helped in develop a local EMT program.
