Update on Class Representatives
You may regularly get notices from your class representatives, and you may have memories of them from those years of shared experiences back at UW Medical School. But what are they up to lately? What’s new in their professional and personal lives? What are the things that keep them in touch with the school? With this issue of the Quarterly, we begin a new section that brings you up to date on your class representatives.
Like all of us, class representatives are busy people. But they’ve set aside time to work for the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association (WMAA), to do what they can to stay connected with the school and their classmates. We tracked down a few of them to help you catch up before reunion time. Your class representatives want to hear from you. They’d love to see you. They’d like you to participate as much as you can in WMAA.
Class of 1951
Nathan(Nate) Hilrich
Your fondest memory in Med School: The fondest memories of medical school days include Ruth, my wife, and me setting up housekeeping in September '47 in a basement apartment on Brooks St. in Madison after our marriage in June.
They include my first oral exam with Dr, Sullivan, professor of anatomy, on the vasculature of the upper extremity. My mind became a blank so he offered me a cigarette to settle my thoughts. I learned at that moment that he smoked "Home Runs", an English cigarette that was made with cigar tobacco. After 5 minutes of coughing I began to think clearly.
A very fond memory: hearing for the first time the "Medichoir" organized by Lyle Olson of our class and performing at the Union Theatre before the Med School faculty and student body.
Hobbies/interests: During the 70's & 80's driving fast cars on a road racing track on weekends was a hobby and woodworking was practiced in our home shop since the 60's. Our chief hobby now is watching our grandchildren grow and develop.
Other News: Our class numbered 70 on graduation and a few more on admission in 1947. Most of us served in WW II and completed our premedical studies after discharge from the services.
Beginning with our class president, Bob Samp, we've had 3 other reps who have encouraged and organized Class Newsletters and important reunions---Jim Warrick, Sam Perlson and currently Audrey Huckaby and me.
Faculty member remembered the most and why: Our Dean, William S. Middleton, had been Commanding General of the Medical Services of the European Theatre of Operations during that war. There was a closeness and camaraderie of our class, our Dean and our faculty that developed during medical school and persisted for the many years since.
Plans for a reunion: The "Newsletter of the Class of 1951" was sent to all the classmates in January. We should have at least 70% response. This year is our 55th reunion so we will do some planning with the WMAA office and classmates for next Spring. Plan to come. We will be honored guests of the magnificent Health Science Learning Center.
Class of 1955
Eugene Weston
Type of Practice: Gen/Thoracic/Vascular Surgery
Dr. Weston, a native of Baraboo, WI received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1952 and his M.D. from the University of Wisconsin 1955. He completed a Gen/Thoracic/Vascular surgical residency at U.W./VA in 1960. From 1960-65, he was the first Chief of Surgery at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Dr. Weston practiced in Baraboo from 1965-71 with his brother-in law, Dr. John T. Siebert, and built the Medical Associates Clinic. In 1971, he began a surgical practice in Denver which he developed with Dr. Charles Mains into Colorado Surgical Services, a 13 man surgical group. He was a clinical associate professor of surgery, University of Colorado. Dr. Weston served as a trustee of Johns Hopkins University, 1978-84.
Hobbies/Interests: Special interests include private pilot (inst./comm.) 35 years, golf, computer, travel, and medical missions to Bangladesh and Mexico City.
Other news: Dr. Weston has been married to Marge (former U.W. orthopedic nurse) for 50 years and they have 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
Faculty member remembered and why: A single statement by Dr. Ben Lawton, his preceptor at Marshfield changed his career. Dr. Weston indicated he would like a 2 year surgical residency and then practice in Baraboo. Dr. Lawton states, “if you want to be a surgeon, be a surgeon!”
Reunion: We had a great reunion in Madison and renewed many old friendships. The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful weekend in Madison. We’re only sorry that half could not make it for health or other reasons.
Class of 1960
Frank Murray
Type of Practice: Internal Medicine
Your fondest memory while in Med School? Following our final exams in our jun ior year we put on a night of musical skits spoofing our professors and ourselves. We had some fine musical talent among our classmates, and they made up new words to music from current Broadway plays such as “Music Man”, “My Fair Lady” and “Westside Story”. It was a huge success.
Hobbies/Interests: My passion in life is observational astronomy, astrophotography and astrophysics. I am currently planning and building an observatory for the U.S. Forest Service.
Other news: I am currently on the Board of Directors of a number of organizations such as our local hospital foundation, a substance abuse prevention and rehabilitation center and a large national HMO.
Faculty member remembered and why: Dr. Gabrielle Zu Rhein from the Pathology Department because she was my mentor in clinical research I did during medical school.
Message to your classmates: I was one of a very few of the students in medical school who was married with children all four years, so I didn’t have the luxury of a social as well as an academic interaction with my classmates. I believe my memories of my classmates and our years together in medical school have become fonder with time.
Reunion: The 45th reunion of our class went very well, and the Health Sciences Learning Center is beautiful. Twenty-five people, including guests, were present.
Class of 1965
Harvey Wichman
Type of practice: Orthopedic Surgery
Your fondest memory while in Med School? Association with Drs. Thomas, Odland, and Gredlen, orthopedists in Janesville, Wisconsin. They enjoyed their practice and taught with enthusiasm.
Hobbies/interests: Skiing, fishing, and attempts at golf. (Frustration still greater than enjoyment).
Other news: Oldest son in practice in my group. Youngest son a Med IV is planning to follow same.
Faculty member remembered the most and why: Otto Mortenson—wonderful, kind man, who loved to teach the brought out the best in students.
Message to your classmates: Don’t forget the significance of our medical education in our professional lives—and stay attached through our alumni association.
Class of 1970
Sandra Osborn
Type of practice: Trained in Pediatrics; now the J.D. Kabler Class Mentor for the class of 2006 at the UW Med School
Your fondest memory while in Med School? Hard to say – week-ends when I could get some extra sleep; Graduation was memorable because of the circumstances with the local rioting, and National Guard personnel at the Stadium; all the women in med school getting together at noon to share and encourage each other; some patients I still remember that I met during my clinical experiences.
Hobbies/interests: Music: Recorder, church choir, hand bells; Running (in road races when there’s time) Counted Cross Stitch; International food/American, too – both eating and cooking.
Other news: I’ve kept busy with the Wisconsin Medical Society and more recently with the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation, and am looking forward to increased activity with the UW Medical Alumni Association as President-Elect and in 1 ½ years as President.
Faculty member remembered the most and why: Jim Petterson – he really wanted to help the students; Williams S. Middleton – a legend and we saw him just enough to understand and believe many of the stories told about him.
Reunion: We had a great time sharing life experiences and catching up with each other. Being together in person is much more interesting than only reading about classmates. We enjoyed a multi-class reception in the atrium of the new Health Sciences Learning Center and a dinner grouping of just our class.
Class of 1971
Bob Jaeger
Type of practice: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Your fondest memory while in Med School? Graduation Day—the culmination of many years of effort. Although not yet qualified to practice or be licensed, that goal was clearly in sight.
Hobbies/interests: Reading, hiking, fishing, hunting, yard and garden work, auditing courses at UWSP, woodworking and photography. I actually plan to pursue as many of these as I can as soon as I finish on the Boards of Directors of the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund, the Wisconsin State Medical Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association, as well as the Wisconsin AMA Delegation and a plethora of committees, commissions and councils.
Other news: Six grandchildren (all of which are under the age of six and all of which are faster than I am).
Faculty member remembered the most and why: Otto Mortenson and James Pettersen who took a great interest in teaching and an even greater interest in their students. Ted Goodfriend who challenged us to question everything.
Message to your classmates: We have been privileged to practice medicine and to having benefited from strong tradition of commitment to our patients and our profession. In gratitude it behooves us to encourage and support the students who will succeed us. Please remember a negative comment overheard by a student is unlikely to be taken in the appropriate perspective and may have unintended consequences. Your support of these young colleagues, both intellectually and financially. will have a profound effect on the future of our profession.
Plans for a reunion: It would be great to see as many of the Class of ’71 as possible. We’ll celebrate our 35th reunion in conjunction with alumni weekend, May 5-6th. A tour of the new Medical School will be offered. If you have suggestions for our reunion, please contact me or the Medical Alumni Association.
Class of 1975
Alex Tucker
Type of practice: Family Practice
Your fondest memory while in Med School? Autopsy pathology lecture by Dr. Harrington. The junior skits. The performance of Urethra Lindgren and the Incontinents at the Alumni Banquet.
Hobbies/interests: Fishing on Lake Michigan, tending to my tulips and rose garden.
Other news: Recently rejoined Columbia St. Mary’s Hospitals in Milwaukee and busy with practice and building a new house.
Faculty member remembered the most and why: James Pettersen as Chair of Admissions (no draft) and Gross Anatomy lectures. Dr. William S. Middleton medical rounds at the V.A. Hospital.
Class of 1990
John Hokanson
Type of practice: Pediatric Cardiology with interests in adult congenital heart disease and cardiac catheterization.
Your fondest memory while in Med School? My first exposure to clinical medicine was with Drs. Mary Arenburg and George Schroeder in Plymouth, as part of the first year summer externship program. I was impressed and fascinated by clinical medicine as practiced on a very personal level by two very caring physicians.
I was lucky enough to observe quite a number of different health care systems at work in medical school; rural Wisconsin, tertiary care hospital, community hospital, Indian Health Service, and the VA. In residency and beyond I also got a chance to spend some more time on the Navajo reservation, spent a month working in Botswana, and later took a job with the English national health service.
Hobbies/interests: What free time available is usually is spent with our children and their activities. I’ve found it comical to find myself helping to coach some of their teams, despite never having participated, or really knowing anything about some of the activities in question.
Other news: I seem to be a habitual government employee, working for the University of Wisconsin, the British national health service, the University of Minnesota, and now the University of Wisconsin again. (I did have a three year venture into private practice, but had a clinical appointment at the University of Illinois at the time.)
Faculty member remembered the most and why: Bob Schilling: a voice of experience and reason in what was a somewhat disorienting array of seemingly unrelated facts
Message to your classmates: Best wishes and good luck
Class of 1995
Thomas Weigel
Type of practice: I completed an Adult Psychiatry Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Children's Hospital, Boston. Currently, I am a psychiatrist at The Klarman Eating Disorders Center at McLean Hospital. It is a residential treatment program for girls age 13-23 with anorexia and bulimia. In addition, I am an Instructor at Harvard Medical School, and have a private psychiatry practice in Boston.
Your fondest memory while in Med School? In medical school, I lived with three other UW medical students: Larry Jonaus, Dave Kunstman and Matt Connolly. My fondest memory occurred one day, when Larry and I opted to golf rather than attend lectures. We were relaxing in front of the television, watching "Lickity Split". Dave came home to tell us that we had missed "the most amazing lecture" on pharmacology. "You guys should have been there, because that stuff is going to be on the exam." As Larry and I sat on the couch, regretting our absence, Matt walked in the door saying, "Wow, that was a useless lecture…what a waste of my time."
Hobbies/interests: In my free time, I enjoy golf, skiing, running, and going to rock concerts. Most winter weekends are spent skiing in Vermont, and most summer weekends are spend on Nantucket or on the North Shore of Massachusetts. For concerts this past year, I was able to see Coldplay, Interpol, Al Green, U2, The Pixies, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Morrissey and a few others. I have always been a music fan, and it is a pleasure to see both new and classic bands live.
Other news: My girlfriend, Sarah Hall, and I have been dating for a year and a half now. We had a long-distance relationship, LA to Boston, for awhile. Her family is from the Boston area, so she moved back here about a year ago. Together, we have two children: Sloane the Pug, and Maude the French Bulldog. I will bring pictures to the reunion to share/compare with all of you.
Faculty member remembered the most and why: My fondest memories of a faculty member are of our Medical School Dean, Lawrence Martin, M.D., (AKA: Dean Martin). He came to the position of Dean from California, and had a vision for the UW Medical School of a new and expanded medical training campus. However, he was not focused merely on new buildings, or as he called it, "bricks and mortar". Rather he focused on having a new program to put into the new buildings. He focused on revising the medical school curriculum, teaching staff, research departments and clinical staff. His work was not appreciated by all, and this led to the demise of his tenure at the University of Wisconsin. But, as you look around at the new buildings near the UW Hospital, and note the status of the UW Medical School nationally, you will see that his time here had a strong and permanent impact.
Message to your classmates: At our medical school graduation, Ants Palm-Leis and Courney Scaife (girl Courtney) said that I would have to plan the reunions. Well, here it goes.
