Emeritus Faculty Awards

The University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association Emeritus Faculty Award recognizes outstanding service to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. It is offered to an emeritus faculty member who has exhibited exceptional commitment to the school over a period of years.

 

2009 Emeritus Faculty Award Recipients

 

Clinical Sciences

This award is given to a clinical scientist who demonstrated long and effective service to the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in teaching and/or research or noteworthy administration, including program development.

 

Frank L. Myers, MD


Frank Myers, MDAn ophthalmologist at Davis-Duehr Eye Associates in Madison from 1968-95, Dr. Myers was a faculty member in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences until becoming a professor emeritus in 1997.

 

He was--and continues to be--highly valued by all colleagues as well as students. Dr. Myers had a wide spectrum of research interests: diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, ocular melanoma and clinical trials. He was especially dedicated to medical student education, teaching in the Patient, Doctor and Society course and introducing students to global health in the Philippines and Guatemala.

 

Since his retirement, Dr. Myers continues to participate in the operation of the Free Rural Eye Clinic in San Fabian, Philippines. Dr. Myers earned his MD at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and interned in Oakland, California. He spent two years as a general medical officer in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines, and then was in family practice in Iowa before doing a residency in ophthalmology at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

 

 

Basic Sciences

 

This award is given to a basic scientist who demonstrated long and effective service to the SMPH in teaching and/or research or noteworthy administration, including program development.

 

John (Jack) F. Fowler, PhD, DSc

Jack Fowler, PhDA professor of human oncology and medical physics at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Fowler is internationally recognized as a leader in radiation oncology. He is widely admired by students, faculty and colleagues for his enthusiasm, insight and humility.

 

After earning a PhD in physics and a DSc in radiobiology from London University, he spent 19 years in medical physics in the United Kingdom before moving to the Gray Lab of UK Cancer Research Campaign, where he served as director for 19 years.

 

From 1988-2004, Dr. Fowler spent two five-year periods in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health human oncology and medical physics departments, becoming emeritus in 1994. He also served as a visiting professor in Belgium and Sweden.His publications number 540. One of his biggest contributions to his field was defining the biologically effective dose of radiation treatment schedules. Now retired (mostly), he lives in Central London, near the National Theatre, where he can carry on with a lifelong interest in theater.
