Medical Alumni Citation Award

The University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association Medical Alumni Citation Award goes to a University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health alumnus who has achieved distinction in medicine. Achievement is recognized through excellence in the practice of medicine, in academic activities, and in research accomplishment.

Dennis G. Maki, MD '67

  
Dennis Maki, MDThe Ovid O. Meyer Professor of Medicine in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Section of Infectious Diseases, Dr. Maki is the epidemiologist at UW Hospital and Clinics and an attending physician in the hospital's Center for Trauma and Life Support. He has devoted his research career to preventing nosocomial infections and managing septic shock and other life-threatening infections.

 

A past consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services, he is a former president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and councilor of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

 

In 2000, he received a citation from the Infectious Diseases Society of America for lifetime achievements. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Dr. Maki was appointed a consultant to the CDC's National Response to Bioterrorism.

 

Dr. Maki has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1982, has wonnumerous awards for teaching-at UW, nationally and internationally-and has published more than 300 original papers, editorials, chapters and reviews.

 

Following graduation from the SMPH, Dr. Maki completed an internal medicine residency and an infectious disease fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He worked at the CDC before joining the SMPH faculty in 1974.
