Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Awards

The University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards is a University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health medical student elected award given to teachers in recognition of their outstanding qualities.

 

Distinguished Award for Basic Sciences Teaching

 

This award recognizes the most distinguished basic science teacher in the first two years of medical school as identified by second-year medical students.

 

Kevin Strang, MD
Kevin T. Strang, PhD

 

Dr. Strang earned an MS degree in zoology and PhD in physiology from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been a member of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's physiology department since 1994.

 

He teaches both undergraduate and medical school human physiology courses, and since 2001 has also given numerous university and public outreach lectures on the mechanism of alcohol's effects on human physiology.

 

He has received many awards for his teaching excellence.


Outstanding Resident Teaching Award

 

This award recognizes the superlative teaching efforts of a resident.

Anna Ibele, MD
Anna Ibele, MD 

 

Dr. Ibele is a general surgery resident at UW Hospital and Clinics. She completed a pediatrics residency at Duke University after earning her medical degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine.

 

With an interest in surgery of the alimentary tract, she has given several national presentations on esophagectomies.

 

In 2006 the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's Class of 2006 presented her the "Outstanding Intern Award." 


Distinguished Award for Clinical Science Teaching

 

These awards recognize the most distinguished clinical teachers at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health's four major teaching locations at LaCrosse, Madison, Marshfield and Milwaukee.


Cheng Her, MD, MSCheng Her, MD, MS, LaCrosse

 

Dr. Her is a family practice physician at Gundersen Lutheran Clinic in LaCrosse and a clinical assistant professor at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. He is a mentor/preceptor in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Primary Care Clerkship Program.

 

With an MD degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, he completed his residency in family medicine at UW and earned an MS degree in population health at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. 

 

 

 

 

Michael Bentz, MD

Michael L. Bentz, MD, Madison

 

A professor of surgery, pediatrics and neurosurgery, Dr. Bentz is chair of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

 

He earned his medical degree at Temple University and completed residencies in general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as a fellowship in microvascular surgery research. Frequently named a best doctor in America, he also has been recognized with numerous teaching and other awards. 

 

 

 

 

Steven Yale, MDSteven H. Yale, MD, Marshfield


Dr. Yale is director of the Clinical Research Center and of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Marshfield Clinic. He is also a clinical associate professor at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

 

He is consistently recognized for his excellence in teaching medical students and residents. Dr. Yale earned his MD at Albany Medical College and completed his residency and a fellowship at Mayo Clinic.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Barbara Horner, MD

 

Barbara Horner-Ibner, MD '88, MA, MDiv, Milwaukee

 

Dr. Horner-Ibner is medical director of the Bread of Healing Clinic at Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. She has been a clinical assistant professor at the SMPH Milwaukee Clinical Campus.

 

A graduate of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, she did her residency in internal medicine at Aurora-Sinai Medical Center. She also has master's degrees in social work and divinity. She has earned many awards for teaching excellence.
