University of Wisconsin
Medical Alumni Association
A strategic plan for the years 2007-2011

Mission
The mission of the University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association (WMAA) is:

To cultivate relationships with alumni and students that support and strengthen the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH).

The WMAA exists to serve the following constituents:
•Graduates of the SMPH
•Residents (current and former)
•Students
•Faculty(current and former)

Vision
WMAA is a leader in serving the needs of its constituents and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. The SMPH is strengthened through WMAA affiliations with the UW Foundation and the SMPH and through the active engagement of alumni and students.

Core functions:
•Communications
Examples: Quarterly magazine, WMAA website, class representative correspondence.
•Events and programs
Examples: Alumni weekend, Homecoming, awards banquet, Max Fox event, HOST and SAPP programs.
•Student initiatives
Examples: Scholarships, Dean’s Cup, White Coat, Graduation, Operation Education, HOST and SAPP programs.

Priorities:
A. Communication: Improve the effectiveness of all communications with WMAA constituents.

B. Participation: Increase the active engagement of WMAA constituents.

A. Financial support: Increase the WMAA endowments to sustain the organization.

2007-2011 Goals and Objectives

A. Communication: Improve the effectiveness of all communications with WMAA constituents.

Goals:
• Build pride and loyalty with alumni, residents and students.
•Advocate for policy issues that support and strength SMPH.
• Maintain a productive relationship with the Dean of the SMPH.

We will accomplish these goals through the following actions:
•Develop a “wall of honor” for alumni leaders, award recipients, etc.
•Express gratitude for involvement in WMAA initiatives.
•Inform constituents of SMPH, alumni and student accomplishments.
•Develop the WMAA website to build connections with constituents.
•Enhance the effectiveness of class representatives by restructuring and defining the role of class representatives.
•Provide class representatives with technology to enhance their networking.

B. Participation: Increase the active engagement of WMAA constituents in special and on-going programs.

Goals:
•Engage alumni, especially those who are not involved.
•Engage residents and resident graduates.
•Engage medical students.
•Engage newly retired alumni.

We will accomplish these goals through the following actions:
•Build programs to support future residents and students.
•Develop leaders from the recent graduating classes.
•Restructure and define the role of class representatives.
•Build on the geographical reps and use them more often.
•Create a “Badger connection” with residents and their significant others
•Offer programs and services for newly retired alumni.

C. Financial support: Increase the WMAA endowments to sustain the organization.

Goals:
•Raise the level of our endowments to ensure financial stability.
•Clarify and act on our fundraising role in partnership with UW Foundation.
•Increase our ability to support students and maintain connections.

We will accomplish these goals through the following actions:
•Build the WMAA fund to support all operational expenses.
•Identify a Development Director to support the WMAA.
•Increase the number of alumni who are life members in WMAA.
•Increase the number of alumni who are annual dues paying members in WMAA.
•Explore the effectiveness of the low interest student loan vs. scholarship.
•Consider Super Life Members.
•Use alumni functions to raise funds for students. Invite students to describe student funding needs.
