The Department of Medical Genetics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is one of two departments within the UW-Madison Laboratory of Genetics. It is complementary to the Department of Genetics, which is administered through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
Although administratively distinct, these two departments function as one at both the faculty and student levels. A National Institutes of Health Genetics Training Grant, administered by the Laboratory of Genetics, includes genetics trainers from many other departments, thereby providing graduate students the greatest possible diversity and opportunities in modern genetics research.
Many students conduct their thesis research in the Genetics Building, a relatively new structure housing well-designed laboratories provided with all the equipment necessary for state-of-the-art genetic research. Students choosing professors with laboratories outside the Genetics Building find comparable facilities.
