Department of Medical History and Bioethics

The Department of Medical History and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison dates back to 1950, when the University of Wisconsin Medical School created a Department of the History of Medicine, the second department of its kind in the country. The Program in Medical Ethics has been an integral part of the department since its founding in 1973.

This is an important time for the medical history and bioethics department as it moves to integrate research and teaching with the ongoing transformation of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Looking toward the future requires both an understanding of our past and insight and analysis of our present.

Department faculty members, drawn from the disciplines of history, medicine, anthropology, law, philosophy, public health and disability studies, actively pursue questions and research agendas about the social relations of patients and their families, physicians and other care givers, and policymakers and legislatures.
