Department of Medical Physics

pinnacleThe Department of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, part of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, offers graduate training and education in radiological physics and dosimetry and in functional, anatomical and interventional medical imaging.

 

The department's mission includes conducting basic and clinical research that will lead to new applications of physics for diagnosis and treatment of disease, training new generations of medical physicists and providing professional physics service and teaching in health care facilities, laboratories and training centers throughout the world.

 

The department is located in the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research. Faculty conduct research in:

  • Biomagnetism
  • Biomedical optics and spectroscopy
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Functional brain imaging
  • Ultrasound imaging
  • Elastography
  • Radiation dosimetry
  • Tomotherapy
  • Brachytherapy
  • High Linear Energy Transfer (LET) particle therapy
  • Image-guided therapy
