University of Wisconsin School of Madison and Public Health
Take a few moments to learn how University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health will prepare you for your career and future. As you read on, you also will discover what is so special about our city, campus community and vision of an integrated school of medicine and public health.

Mission
Our mission is to help meet the health needs of Wisconsin and beyond through excellence in education, research, patient care and community service. That goal is renewed each fall when approximately 150 entering medical students—men and women from throughout the United States—arrive at UW School of Medicine and Public Health to begin their journeys toward fulfilling careers in healthcare.

Community
As a student here, you are welcomed into a community that many students consider our school’s hallmark. Here, students and faculty work together to fulfill the dreams that come through
our doors.

Tradition
You also become part of a rich tradition that dates back to 1907 when the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents launched a two-year basic science program. In 1927, 19 men and six women became the school’s first graduates. In 1979, the Clinical Sciences Center opened, bringing together inpatient and clinical services with the training facilities of the UW health sciences schools. The school moved into the Health Sciences Learning Center in 2004, and a year later, changed its name to the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. You will walk in the steps of this history of patient care, research, education and community service.

By becoming part of this legacy, you join a diverse and accomplished group of graduates who have become leaders in their specialties, established medical programs at other institutions, and practice medicine every day in cities and towns throughout the country.

The student experience
UW School of Medicine and Public Health students have the chance to explore virtually all areas of medicine in many settings. Public health is being integrated into all four years of medical student education. In addition to training physicians, the school is a leader in health sciences education, providing graduate degree programs, a master of public health program, continuing medical education programs and degree programs for physician assistants, clinical laboratory scientists, physical therapists and genetic counselors.

With more than 1,200 faculty members, most of whom care for patients as well as teach, UW School of Medicine and Public Health is an academic and research leader. Our faculty members have been pioneers in treating head injuries, transplanting organs, computerizing X-ray images of blood vessels, exploring gene therapy, establishing the sun protection factor (SPF), understanding the common cold and forging new territory through stem cell research.

U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks UW School of Medicine and Public Health in the upper echelon of medical schools in its annual America’s Best Graduate Schools, recognizing it as a national leader for primary care education and research activity as measured by federal funding. By many other metrics—including the performance of graduates in residencies and number of doctoral degrees awarded—the school excels.
