Grantsburg Fourth-Year Preceptorship in Family Medicine

The MD Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison offers a fourth-year family medicine preceptorship with Blaise Vitale, MD, in Grantsburg.

Welcome Message from Blaise Vitale, MD

Blaise Vitale, MD, Grantsburg PreceptorI moved to Grantsburg in 1991 after joining the National Health Service Corps. This medically under-served area is a growing rural community on Wisconsin's northwestern border, about a five-hour drive from Madison.

We're only about 90 minutes north of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Outdoor activities abound here — hiking, biking, fishing, boating, canoeing, hunting, etc.

Since I moved here, I've helped in the struggle to improve health care for the entire county. Health outcomes have definitely improved during this time. Our 17-bed hospital has recently finished a major renovation that included building a new clinic and emergency room as we continue to improve health care access and quality locally.

The Grantsburg preceptorship is best suited for a student planning a career in primary care, but students going into any specialty are welcome.

Our staff and patients are very supportive and welcoming of students in the clinic, emergency room and hospital. Limited time is available to work with visiting specialists. A motivated student is likely to have a wonderful learning experience here.

I look forward to working with every student who chooses our site. Come experience lakeside living in Burnett County!
