Reedsburg Fourth-Year Preceptorship in Family Medicine
Reedsburg Information
The MD Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison offers a fourth-year family medicine preceptorship with Deanna Benish, MD, in Reedsburg.
Welcome Message from Deanna Benish, MD
Practicing medicine in a small town is an art as much as a science. Rural physicians have a unique and special relationship with their patients and their communities. Gaining the understanding of how that web of care is woven is an eye-opening educational activity.
As the preceptor for the Reedsburg rural preceptorship, I feel blessed to be able to share this art with fourth-year medical students. Our opportunity here is unique, and requires a motivated learner ... because we believe that you get out of it what you put into it. The Reedsburg site is best suited for a student planning a career in primary care, but students going into any specialty are certainly most welcome. You will see and do many things that your peers are not getting to experience. We have access to a number of providers from many areas of medicine. Also, our practice is still organized and administered by the providers that work here. If you seek to learn more about the practice of medicine, both scientifically AND practically, you will find that here.
Reedsburg is a growing and progressive rural community about 50 miles north of Madison. The estimated population is just under 10,000 in the city of Reedsburg, and the service area has grown to greater than 25,000. We're located just a few miles from Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo. Our doctors live AND work in our local community, and will introduce you to what life might be like after you complete your training.
I joined the practice at Reedsburg Physicians Group in 2001 and enjoy the long-lasting relationships I've made with patients, staff, and community members here. I practice the full scope of family medicine, including prenatal and maternity care, pediatrics, preventative medicine, nursing home rounds, inpatient and outpatient medicine, and urgent/acute care. I have married and started a family since I started my professional career in Reedsburg, and I now feel knit into the fiber of this community.
Our attitude toward medical students here is very positive and supportive in both the clinic and hospital settings. Because of the wide range of opportunities available here (you can't possibly do it all in six weeks), personal motivation and initiative are a must for each student.
You are sure to enjoy the many outdoor activities here:
- Hiking
- Biking (The 400 Trail)
- Fishing
- Boating (Lake Redstone, Dutch Hollow Lake, Baraboo River)
- State parks (Devil's Lake, Mirror Lake)
- Cross-country and downhill skiing
- Snowmobiling
There are also many specialty shops, antique stores, golf courses and fitness centers. Students are housed at a local bed and breakfast in downtown Reedsburg. It's a beautiful Victorian-style home in a perfect central location.
