Shawano Fourth-Year Preceptorship in Family Medicine

The MD Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison offers a fourth-year family medicine preceptorship with Yu-Chin Fang, MD, in Shawano.

Welcome Message from Yu-Chin Fang, MD

Yu-Chin Fang, MD, Shawano PreceptorShawano has been a preceptorship site for a number of years. Since approximately 2003, I have succeeded Dr. Hart in being the head preceptor.

Being a graduate of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and having completed a family medicine residency Eau Claire, I feel honored to contribute to medical education as an alumni.

The medical community in Shawano is not only friendly to students, but is rich with educational opportunities.

The preceptorship traditionally has been flexible to students' needs. Students may choose to concentrate on outpatient experiences in the main Shawano Clinic, at a rural site where I currently practice (Clintonville) or the Menominee Tribal Clinic in Keshena.

Call is spent working in the busy emergency room two nights a week and on one weekend during the rotation.

Some students work with the surgeons, certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), or the specialists that visit Shawano, including:

  • Oncology
  • Cardiology
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Urology
  • ENT
  • Psychiatry
  • Ortho
  • Physiatry

Many of the family physicians practice obstetrics, including C-sections and tubals. Because there is rarely more than one student or resident at a time, students are usually given more authority and front-line experience.

Shawano also offers a variety of recreational activities. There are good cross country ski trails within few miles of town, or on the larger systems in the Nicolet National Forest north of the reservation. In the summer, whitewater rafting on the Wolf River is popular. The Wolf, Red, Embarrass rivers also have good stretches for canoeing and kayaking. Watching the salmon run is also a popular activity every spring. And, of course, there are plenty of parks, beaches and trails.

There are community recreation centers in Shawano and Clintonville that have swimming pools, exercise rooms, and tennis courts. With a student ID, they are available for minimal charge. There are two movie theaters, cafes, sandwich shops, pizza parlors, restaurants, etc. The hospital cafeteria, which has very good food, provides meal allowances for students and will pack a sack lunch upon request.

I can go on and on, but it's best to come experience our preceptorship for yourself.
