The MD Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison offers a fourth-year family medicine preceptorship with Jeff Menn, MD, and William Calkins, MD, in Westby and Viroqua.

Welcome Message from Jeff Menn, MD, and William Calkins, MD

This preceptorship was started in 1954 by P.T. Bland, MD, in a truly rural area of southwestern Wisconsin located approximately 95 miles northwest of Madison and about 30 miles from La Crosse.

There are two clinics in which students will work - the Bland-VMH Clinic in Westby with P.T. Bland, MD, and William Calkins, MD; and the Hirsch Clinic in Viroqua with Jeff Menn, MD.

You will also spend time with several physicians working in the Vernon Memorial Hospital emergency room. Multiple subspecialty services are available in the hospital which can cater to any special interests. The study of alternative and holistic practices is also available.

The atmosphere at both clinics is relaxed and friendly and you will have a one-on-one teaching experience here.

Room and board are provided by the hospital rooming in a house separate from the hospital. There is plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities in this rugged part of Wisconsin and students can have access to the hospital fitness center.
