Wisconsin Rapids Fourth-Year Preceptorship in Surgery

The MD Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison offers a fourth-year surgery preceptorship with Joseph Garde, MD, at Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids.

Welcome Message from Joseph Garde, MD

Joseph Garde, MD, Wisconsin Rapids PreceptorThis six-week rotation will be spent primarily working directly with me and will consist of a combination of general, vascular, and trauma surgery. Students will essentially mirror my life for six weeks and be involved in the care of my patient population during that time.

A typical week includes both inpatient and outpatient experiences. Students will see new and hospitalized patients on daily rounds and consultations. On days that preceptor is on call, students will see Emergency Room consultations. Students will have multiple opportunities to follow patients from initial consultation, through their surgery and post-operative hospital stay, and finally in office follow-up.

Focus in the operating room will be on stressing basic surgical skills, which will be of great use in the future. While the majority of the rotation will be with the preceptor, other surgeons welcome the students to work with them on a case-by-case basis. Likewise, if student has specific subspecialty interests, an attempt to expose student to those disciplines will be made as much as possible.

We are committed to making this a great experience for students. If you have questions or are interested in the rotation, please contact us and check out the Riverview Hospital Association website.
