Overarching Course Goals for Integrated Cardiovascular System

  • Expand and reinforce the knowledge of normal cardiac anatomy and physiology

  • Understand the major concepts of fluid dynamics and how the cardiovascular system interacts with the rest of the body regarding normal and abnormal alterations in blood flow and blood pressure

  • Understand major concepts of coronary and peripheral vascular abnormalities as relates to atherosclerosis, changes in blood flow, and ischemia

  • Understand the major concepts of the cardiac electrical system regarding normal and abnormal response to disease and the clinical impact and therapies

  • Understand the major concepts of the heart as a pump, including the normal function and pathology of the myocardium, pericardium and the valvular structures

  • Recognize how these cardiac abnormalities manifest clinically as disease processes

  • Understand the general principles and specific therapies for the management of cardiovascular disease
