Related Resources
During the third year of the MD Program curriculum, medical students at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison will complete a rotation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The following information outlines feedback, evaluation and grading procedures.
Feedback
Students will meet with the site director and/or additional attending physician during week three-four of the rotation. The midrotation feedback form (pdf) will be first completed by the student for self-assessment, and then completed by the site director or attending physician.
Clinical Grade
Your clinical grade is reported as (A), (B) or (C). A clinical grade of (C) or better must be obtained to pass the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. A grade of (A) is assigned for exemplary clinical performance, which we estimate will be about 15 to 20 percent of all students. Most students will receive a grade of (B). We expect very few students to receive a (C).
Final Written Exam
The final exam is the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Obstetrics and Gynecology Subject Test or "shelf" exam. The exam is 2 hours 10 minutes and consists of 100-110 questions. The content breakdown of the questions is available on the NBME website. Exam scores and their grade equivalent are given in the chart below.
Remediation
A failure on either the exam or clinical work requires that the student successfully repeat that portion of the clerkship. Your grade will be reported as an Incomplete/Fail (IF). The grade on the repeated portion of your clerkship will be lowered by one full letter grade when used to calculate your clerkship final grade. If clinical work or the exam is failed a second time, the IF grade is replaced by an F grade and the student must repeat the entire course.
Failure in both areas of the clerkship requires repeating the entire clerkship. Your first clerkship grade will be reported as an F along with the grade achieved on the repeated clerkship.

Grade Reporting
Third-year Ob/Gyn clerkship final grades are reported when clinical grades are submitted and the exam grades are received from the NBME. This process can take up to four weeks.
Grade Change Policy
In order to challenge your clinical grade or final grade, you must do so by submitting a one-page (maximum) letter outlining the reason(s) for the challenge. You must file the challenge within two weeks of the grade being posted on OASIS.
Address your letter to the Medical Student Education Office (5E, 5246 Meriter) or Janet Short. Your challenge and student file (includes all clinical grades and evaluation forms from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) will be forwarded to the Clerkship Director. The Clerkship Director will make a decision on the challenge within 10 days of receipt.
