Residents as Teachers

The following is helpful information for residents who teach medical students on radiology rotations at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison.

 

Overview

  • Any Radiology Resident can be asked, or can offer, to teach third and fourth year medical students enrolled in the 832-813 Radiology Required Course.
  • On-line tutorial "Resident Educator Tutorial Course" on Learn@UW by Carol Mitchell, PhD (UW-Madison Department of Radiology) is required.
  • Resident teachers will be mentored by Don Yandow, MD (Medical Student Director), Donna Blankenbaker, MD, and Louis Hinshaw, MD (Co-Directors).
  • The term of teaching can be determined by the residents and/or the Directors/Co-Directors.
  • Residents may teach topics of their choosing. They should provide a handout.
  • Residents may share teaching responsibilities, alternating lectures.
  • Residents must keep their presentations free from discrimination. They may not criticize other specialties or a student's decision to pursue one of these specialties. They must confine themselves to telling of the positives of our specialty.

Schedule

  • Residents will typically be scheduled to lecture starting at noon for 60-75 minutes. They will be provided a copy of the lecture schedule by Carrie Poole, Medical Student Coordinator (CPoole@uwhealth.org). She will assist with any changes to the lecture schedule.
  • There will be 11 rotations per semester. No students are scheduled for the rotations that include the RSNA and the ARRS meetings.

Feedback

  • Student comments are collated and written summaries are distributed to the lecturers approximately each six months. If there are patterns found in the comments, negative or positive, these will be communicated to the residents before the six months.
  • Summaries may be forwarded to the residency directors.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills (as per the ACGME Radiology RC Program Requirements)

 

Residents must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in the effective exchange of information and collaboration with patients, their families, and health professionals.  Residents are expected to:

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and the public, as appropriate, across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, other health professionals and health-related agencies.
  • Work effectively as a member or leader of a health care team or other professional group.
  • Act in a consultative role to other physicians and health professionals.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, referring physicians and other members of the health care team concerning imaging appropriateness, informed consent, safety issues and the results of imaging tests and procedures. Competence in oral communication must be judged through direct observation.  Competence in written communication must be judged on the basis of the quality and timeliness of dictated reports.
  • When they are senior residents, to have experience supervising or acting as consultants to and teaching medical students and residents, i.e., grand rounds, case conferences, medical student lectures, teaching in the reading rooms.
