During the third or fourth year of the MD Program curriculum, medical students at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison will complete a rotation with the Department of Surgery.
Surgery encompasses a diverse range of specialties and includes the following disciplines:
- General surgery
- Colorectal surgery
- Breast surgery
- Surgical oncology
- Trauma surgery
- Burn surgery
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Orthopedics
- Otolaryngology - head and neck surgery
- Plastic surgery
- Transplant surgery
- Urology
- Vascular surgery
While on this clerkship, students will spend four weeks with the general surgeons and two two-week rotations with the subspecialty surgeons or four weeks in La Crosse. Students will also be involved with the trauma/burn and orthopedic trauma teams, particularly while on evening call. The Surgery Core Lecture Series will broaden students' understanding of the scope of surgical practice.
With the suture training course, students will learn skills to apply throughout this clerkship and during future rotations.
We hope you find your time on surgery exciting, interesting and challenging. We hope some of you are inspired to become surgeons and the rest of you gain insight into the practice of surgery, which will aid you in caring for patients in whatever field of medicine you practice. We encourage you all to be proactive learners, ask questions and involve yourselves thoroughly in your own education for the next eight weeks.
