The following information explains the application timeline for the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
1. Submit AMCAS
The MSTP requirements for letters of recommendation are the same as those of the the MD Program, which are described in item 5 on the MD Program Secondary Application web page.
The website is written with applicants to the Regular MD Program in mind, but the instructions also pertain to applicants to the MSTP. However, MSTP applicants should include at least one letter from a research mentor. Mentor letters qualify as either academic or non-academic, or can be in addition to the letters described on the website above.
All letters of recommendation must go through AMCAS. We do not accept letters sent directly to the MSTP office.
Note: Once AMCAS has received your application and transcript(s), it takes approximately four to six weeks to complete the processing cycle.
2. Submit UW-Madison MSTP Secondary Application
After we receive and review your AMCAS application, qualified applicants will be invited to submit an electronic MSTP secondary application.
You can save your Medical Scientist Training Progarm secondary application and return to work on it later. However, once you submit it, you will not be able to change any information. After submitting your application, you can periodically log in to see when our office has received your letters of recommendation and application fee.
When all of your secondary materials have been received, you will be informed that your application is complete. It will then be reviewed at the next meeting of the MSTP admissions committee.
Early completion of the secondary application increases the likelihood that you will be invited to interview.
By completing our admission requirements, you are also submitting everything that the MD Program in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health requires. Therefore, you do not need to submit a separate application for the MD program. We will review your application first.
If you are not accepted into the Medical Scientist Training Program and wish to be considered for medical school's MD program, we will take your file to the MD admissions office for their review. (There is a circle to check on the "Applicant Questionnaire" page of our secondary to indicate this preference.)
3. Interview in Madison
After we receive and review your AMCAS, MSTP secondary application and letters of recommendation, qualified applicants will be invited to a two-day interview in Madison.
Interview Day 1:
- Welcome breakfast
- Meetings with professors of your choice
- Meetings with Medical Scientist Training Program admissions committee members
- Meetings with current students
Interview Day 2:
- Tour of University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics
- Opportunities to explore the UW campus and Madison
- Informal dinner at the home of one of our directors
