Directors

The Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is overseen by a team of directors who have strong backgrounds in clinical practice and basic research, and are committed to the education of physician-scientists.

 

Deane MosherDeane Mosher, MD, Director

Deane Mosher, MD, trained at Dartmouth and Harvard Medical Schools, Duke University Medical Center and the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He came to UW-Madison after extensive research experience at Harvard Medical School, the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the University of Helsinki.

 

He has been a faculty member at UW-Madison for more than three decades with appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Biomolecular Chemistry, and secondary appointments in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Anatomy.

 

Dr. Mosher was head of the Section of Hematology from 1984 to 2003. He is known for contributions to understanding of cell-extracellular matrix interactions and associated disease relationships. He has been associated with the MD/PhD program since its establishment in 1986, was a co-associate director of the program from 1991 through 1997 and has been director since 1999.

 

Dr. Mosher has trained more than 50 PhD, MD, or MD/PhD students or fellows, many of whom have gone on to eminent positions, and also has had the chance to work with MD/PhD students during separate year-long stays in Finland and Sweden.

 

He has been particularly successful in the training of women scientists. In 2006, Dr. Mosher received the first of the American Society of Hematology's annual awards for mentorship in the basic sciences.

Anna HuttenlocherAnna Huttenlocher, MD, Co-Associate Director

Anna Huttenlocher, MD, trained at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital, and University of California-San Francisco. She then moved to the University of Illinois-Champaign and soon became involved with the Illinois MD/PhD program.

 

Dr. Huttenlocher joined the faculty of UW-Madison in 1999 with a joint appointment in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology and has been associate director of the Medical Scientist Training Program since that time. In 2006, she moved her basic science appointment to Medical Microbiology and Immunology.

 

Dr. Huttenlocher is a practicing pediatric rheumatologist. She is recognized internationally for her pioneering studies of cell migration and alterations of cell migration in human diseases.

 

She is an outstanding example of a female physician-scientist who combines family life, research, teaching and clinical work. Dr. Huttenlocher is deeply committed to the education of physician-scientists and has served on various task forces that address this issue.

Robert BlankRobert Blank, MD, PhD, Co-Associate Director

 

Robert Blank, MD, PhD, received his integrated degrees from New York University and did residency and postdoctoral research training at the Tri-Institutions in New York City.

 

After several years as a member of the faculty of the Hospital of Special Surgery, he joined the faculty of UW-Madison in 2000 in the Endocrinology Section of the Department of Medicine. He became associate director of the Medical Scientist Training Program in 2006.

 

Dr. Blank is active in graduate training. His research focuses on the genetics of bone biomechanical performance in mice and also encompasses clinical studies of skeletal development and mineral metabolism. Dr. Blank is an expert on computational aspects of research.

 

He is dedicated to the development of physician-scientists at all levels and taken the lead in involving University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) clinical faculty in the development of a bridging curriculum to facilitate transitions of SMPH students from medical school to graduate study and from graduate study to clinical rotations.
