In 1998, Dr. Sausen achieved board certification in toxicology (DABT). Dr. Sausen spent the majority of his career in the pharmaceutical industry where he has held several roles ranging from Study Director and Toxicology Project Team representative at G. D. Searle, to Toxicology Project Leader and Head of Nonclinical Safety Assessment at Eli Lilly and Company. Each of these roles provided Dr. Sausen with progressive levels of responsibility in the development of new chemical entities including drugs for inflammation (cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors), neuroscience, oncology, and cardiovascular diseases. Most notably, Dr. Sausen was responsible for the conduct of nonclinical safety studies, and was the primary author of regulatory submission documents and responses to regulatory questions for the worldwide submission of Cialis. Dr. Sausen was one of the pivotal members of the Cialis team that defended the safety profile of Cialis to the FDA, CPMP, China CDE, Canada HBP and the MHLW in Japan.
Dr. Sausen is currently the Vice President of Program Management Services at Covance Laboratories. In this role, he leads a group of senior scientists and professional project managers who assist clients with their drug development needs from preclinical safety assessment through clinical proof of concept studies.

Thesis: Immune Function Assays for Waterfowl
As of Fall 2007: Toxicologist; WI Department of Natural Resources
Bio: In my positions at the Department of Natural Resources I have assessed the health conditions of wild white suckers, bullhead, yellow perch and caged channel catfish from waterways contaminated with pollutants like PCBs and PAHs. Presently I coordinate Wisconsin’s fish contaminant monitoring program and work with other state and federal agencies to issue advisories to protect the health of people who eat fish from Wisconsin’s waterways. Fish contaminant data are also used to support programs managing contaminated sediments. PCBs and mercury are the predominant contaminants that cause advisories in Wisconsin. Other fish contaminants monitored include banned pesticides, dioxin and furans, polybrominated diphenyl ethers and perflourinated chemicals.

Graduate Work: My project explored the hepatotoxicity and the in vivo metabolism (glutathione conjugates) of 3-butene-1,2-diol in mice and rats . This project involved working with rats and mice, a significant amount of analytical chemistry and organic syntheses.
Dissertation: Species Differences in the Metabolism and Toxicity of 3-Butene-1, 2-diol, a Major Metabolite of 1,3-Butadiene
Graduate Experience: I came in from a small company working as a laboratory technician. Especially in years three and four, I learned how to work more independently by identifying and answering questions/issues in my project. Overall, I had a positive experience in grad school and my experience has provided the fundamental skills to excel in my positions after graduation.
As of Fall 2007: Abbott Labs
Bio: I worked for a little over two years at a medium-sized chemical company, Infineum (July 2004 to September 2006). At Infineum my job responsibilities included placing and monitoring various tox studies at contract labs, working with a consortium to register multiple substances, work with hazard communications and support global registration of products. After Infineum, I then took a position at Abbott (September 2006 to present) working in the occupational toxicology group. As an occupational toxicologist, I develop exposure and cleaning limits, perform multiple type of environmental and health related risk assessments, support global registration of chemicals (including placing and monitoring tox studies) and complete environmental risk assessments to support new drug applications.
