Justin G. Teeguarden, PhD - Email - (509)376-4262
1999 Advisor- Pitot
Dissertation: Application and Extension of Multistage Hepatocarcinogenesis in the Rat to the Quantification of the Stages of Promotion and Progression
As of Spring 2008: Senior Scientist in the Fundamental and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Bio: Justin Teeguarden has been engaged in the field of toxicology since the late 80's. Since that time he has worked in a variety of capacities most of which involved some aspect of risk assessment and computational modeling. He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in Toxicology and went on to private industry to develop physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for a variety of compounds. Most of these models were used to evaluate the relationship between external exposure, target tissue dose and response. The motivation has been that quantitative models of dose-response that characterize the underlying physiological and biochemical processes are more sound, more flexible platforms for conducting interspecies, dose and dose-route extrapolations. He has received a number of awards, including two for publications advancing the science of risk assessment. Justin now works at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA. where he came to continue following interest in the fundamental biology underlying dose-response relationships by developing models of signaling networks involved in important human environmental diseases. He previously served as a vice president for the DRSG.

Bio: Peter S. Thorne is Professor of Toxicology and Environmental Health in the University of Iowa, College of Public Health. He holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Environmental Engineering. He is also Associate Director of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Human Toxicology at Iowa. He received his MSc in biomedical engineering and PhD in toxicology from the UW and did his post-doctoral training in immunotoxicology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is Director of the NIEHS-funded Environmental Health Sciences Research Center, Director of the University of Iowa, Pulmonary Toxicology Facility and leader of a productive research laboratory engaged in studies of environmental risk factors for asthma, inflammatory lung diseases, endotoxin- and glucan-induced immunomodulation, and novel methodology for exposure assessment. Dr. Thorne teaches graduate level courses on environmental health, human toxicology, and research methods in biological agents. He has served on a wide variety of editorial and review boards forscientific journals, government agencies, and academia and on the NIH National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council.
