Undergraduate Work
Luther College
Bachelor of Science, Biology (2001)

Interests/Hobbies
I love playing and listening to music of all forms. In particular, my
wife (Ann) and I are the church musicians at Primrose Lutheran, a 150
year old rural church (She directs the choirs and I play the piano and
organ for the services). We're expecting our first child next April.

Funding
National Research Service Award Predoctoral Traineeship (NIEHS Training Grant T32, 05/05-present)

Research as of August 2006
The goal of my research is to determine the role of flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) in methionine (Met) metabolism and toxicity. FMOs are membrane-bound enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a variety of sulphur, nitrogen, and phosphorous-containing drugs and xenobiotics. FMO1-4 oxidize Met to methionine sulfoxide (MetO). FMO3, the primary isoform expressed in adult human liver, has the lowest Km and favors methionine-d-sulfoxide (Met-d-O) formation over methionine-l-sulfoxide (Met-l-O). Because female mice, but not males, also express FMO3 in the liver, mice are an appropriate model for studying this enzyme.
