Each new student should rotate in three laboratories prior to selecting a permanent laboratory home. Prior to, and upon arrival, students will have the opportunity to talk with faculty in more detail. During orientation week we host a poster fair and encourage faculty with funding to give short presentations about their research. Students are expected to contact faculty with whom they would like to rotate and arrange a suitable rotation period. Each rotation typically lasts 4 weeks.

The purposes of the rotations are:
  • To learn more about the research projects available to students;
  • To get to know the members of the laboratory;
  • To assess the professor’s mentoring style to see whether the laboratory would be a good fit for both parties (student/faculty).

Try to get the most out of your rotations. Although you may not join a particular laboratory, you may decide that you want that professor to be a member of your Research Advisory Committee (or you may find a friend with similar interests). Typically, students choose their major professor/laboratory, by mutual agreement, by the end of November. You will be asked to provide the METC Program Coordinator with your first, second, and third choices for a mentor. At the same time, all participating faculty will indicate how many new students they will take and their rankings. The METC program director and graduate program coordinator will represent you in making the final arrangements. Special arrangements must be made if you wish to rotate beyond the first semester.
