Graduate School Requirements
Why UW-Madison

METC Entrance Requirements
Students accepted for graduate study in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology have a bachelor's degree in a biological or physical science with an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) above 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. Please note that GPA is only one of many factors considered by the Admissions Committee. For example, students with lower GPAs will be considered if they have significant research laboratory experience because this is key to success in graduate school.

Course Prerequisities
The course prerequisites for the program are as follows.
    Required Before Entry
    • Chemistry — Four semesters, including one of organic chemistry
    • Biology — Three semesters, including general genetics
    • Physics – One semester of math-based physics
If these course are not taken before entry, they must be made up as a deficiency if accepted for admission.

    Highly Recommended Before Entry
    • Analytical chemistry - One semester for students intending to declare an environmental focus.
    • Biochemistry — One semester of an introductory course equivalent to University of Wisconsin-Madison Biochemistry 501. If not completed before entry, must be completed as part of the program and will count toward fulfilling credit requirements of the program.
    • Calculus — One or more semesters.
    • Physics — A second semester of math-based physics.
    • Statistics, Biometrics, or Equivalent — One semester. If not completed before entry, an experimentally based statistics course, such as UW-Madison Statistics 541 or 571, must be completed as part of the program and will count toward fulfilling credit requirements of the program.

Graduate Records Examination
Applicants must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The General Test is required for our program. The Subject Test (Chemistry; Biology; or Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology) is highly recommended, because it is necessary for National Science Foundation Fellowships and some other sources of support.

Test of English as a Foreign Language
International applicants must submit scores from a TOEFL taken within the last two years. The METC generally requires a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based test or a minimum of 250 on the computerized test in order to consider an applicant for admission to the graduate program. Occasionally, admitted applicants are asked to take an English assessment test upon arrival and/or register for an English as a Second Language (ESL) course during the first semester of enrollment.
