Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Summer Research Opportunities Program
for Minority Students

May 27 through August 2, 2008 - Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

Purpose of Grant
The purpose of this grant is to provide traditionally underrepresented minority undergraduate students hands-on research experience in molecular and environmental toxicology; as well as career exploration and weekly tutorial sessions.

Four minority undergraduates will work with UW-Madison faculty affiliated with the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center and researchers in their lab, on ongoing toxicology related projects over the summer. They will mentor students in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, immunotoxicology, environmental toxicant remediation, and other projects.

Summer 2007 is the 13th year of the Summer Research Opportunities Program, funded by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (T35 ES07295). Charles J. Czuprynski, PhD is the Principal Investigator on this grant and is a professor with the School of Veterinary Medicine, Pathobiological Sciences. He has been affiliated with Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center since 1990.

Program Training
A faculty mentor guides each undergraduate through the student research project. Research areas include Biochemical and Genetic Toxicology, Immunotoxicology, and Neurotoxicology, depending on the trainer. Here at UW-Madison/METC you can be part of the solution! Many topic areas are possible such as cancer, genetics, aging, prion (mad cow) disease, neuroprotection, oxidative stress, human development.

A weekly toxicology group tutorial is held to provide an introduction to Molecular and Environmental Toxicology. Each week you will have the opportunity to have small group learning/discussion with a different professional in the field of toxicology.

In addition to research, students receive guidance on toxicology careers, research opportunities in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology, and information about other graduate programs. Students participate in seminars concerning the graduate school application process, laboratory safety and ethics, writing scientific research papers, minority graduate student life, and applying for fellowships. At the end of the 9-week program, students present an oral report on their research during a research symposium.

Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent U.S. residents and underprepresented minority, which includes:
African American
American Indian/Alaskan/Hawaiian
Cambodian
Hispanic/Latino
Hmong
Laotian
Vietnamese

Candiates must be undergraduates and although all undergrads are eligible we prefer sophmores and juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Stipend and Expenses
Our program will cover most expenses related to travel, housing, and we have an allowance for food. We offer a competitive stipend of approximately $3,800 for thesummer. Students selected to participate will have access to all UW-Madison libraries and recreational facilities. All fees and tuition costs are paid by the program.
