Pre- and Post-Doctoral Training Grant
Purpose of Grant
The purpose of the training grant is to provide support for predoctoral- and postdoctoral students whose career goals are directed toward mechanistic toxicology and the role of environmental exposures in human disease in one of the following focal areas: - Carcinogenesis;
- Development, birth defects, and teratogenesis;
- Target organ toxicity; and
- The roles of Inflammation and immunosuppression in disease susceptibility.
Currently, the grant supports eight pre-doctoral and two post-doctoral trainees. "Support" means a stipend, health, insurance, tuition and fees, and some travel money issued at the discretion of the Principal Investigator. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
This training grant was first awarded to the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center in 1975. It comes up for competitive renewal at five year intervals. The current five-year grant expires 06/30/08.
About 25 faculty members are trainers on this grant and are eligible to accept pre-doctoral or post-doctoral trainees in their laboratories. Click here for a list of current trainers. METC students working with these professors are eligible for appointment to trainee positions.
How Slots Are Filled
Each time pre-doctoral vacancies are to be filled, the Training Grant Committee reviews all eligible candidates. To be eligible for consideration student must:- Be in laboratory of a trainer
- Be making satisfactory progress in their research
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Have at least one full year before completing degree
- Have been supported on this grant two years or less.
- Meet with their research advisory committee on annual basis
- Take required core courses and receive grades of B or higher
Stipend
Trainee stipends are fixed by NIH, but can, at the advisor’s discretion, be supplemented from Non-Federal funds. For fiscal year 2006-07 the NIH graduate student annual stipend is $20,772.
Postdoctoral trainee stipends are determined by years of experience after the Ph.D. or M.D. degree. Current annual stipend levels are:- $36,996 (0 years experience)
- $38,976 (1 year)
- $41,796 (2 years)
- Up to $51,036 (7 or more years).
However, University of Wisconsin policy does not permit individuals to be appointed to postdoctoral positions for more than three years total, and postdoctoral appointments on the training grant are limited to two years.
Training Grant Committee Members
The Training Grant Committee is responsible for the selection of trainees and the monitoring of their progress, for recommending changes in the list of trainers, and for instituting changes in the practices of the training grant program. It consists of the Principal Investigator (PI) as the chair, the Deputy PI, plus four faculty trainers who are appointed for staggered three-year terms. Current members consist of:
