Herbert Chen Awarded American Cancer Society Research Professorship

Madison, Wisconsin - Dr. Herbert Chen, professor and vice chair of research in the surgery department at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, has been selected to lead the American Cancer Society's MEN2 Thyroid Cancer Consortium.

 

Herbert ChenThe society has also awarded Chen the ACS MEN2 Thyroid Cancer Professorship. This professorship is the most prestigious research grant given by the ACS and provides funding for full-time investigators who have made seminal contributions to cancer research.

 

He will oversee a program granting multiple research scholar and postdoctoral fellowship grants over a period of five years with a total budget of $9 million. MEN2 refers to a gene mutation that leads to a rare form of inherited thyroid cancer.

 

The ACS award was one of three research professorships awarded nationally during the first half of the society's grant cycle for 2011. The 94 research and training grants totaling $46.6 million go into effect on Jan.1.
