In early fall, all Medical Scientist Training Program students attend an overnight retreat at a wooded or lakeside resort outside of the city of Madison.

The purposes of the retreat are to introduce incoming students, assess progress, discuss improvements for the program and plan for the coming year. Selected faculty trainers may also attend the retreat and discuss pertinent topics.

The student organization's Executive Committee is responsible for planning the retreat with input from the directors. The first evening includes a dinner, introductory talks by the director and student organization co-presidents, and a social gathering.

The second day, the schedule will vary depending on the issues at hand. But typically, the retreat will include student research presentations, breakout sessions by research interest and graduate program, recruitment of members to the student organization subcommittees, discussion of proposed changes to the program and question/answer sessions led by older students.
