Art Walaszek is the associate dean for faculty affairs and development at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is responsible for developing and implementing programs aimed at advancing the success of the school’s faculty.
Walaszek supports faculty and their development in education, research and service work at all clinical practice and educational locations, including the school’s statewide campuses. He facilitates faculty development workshops on promotion and tenure, mentoring, leading effective searches, and other professional development topics. Walaszek also mentors individual faculty members in building careers as researchers, educators and clinicians.
He earned his undergraduate degree in English/creative writing at Northwestern University before attending medical school at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Walaszek completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Washington and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Walaszek has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry since 2002 and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine. He provides psychiatric care to older adults. His ongoing research at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute and the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center focuses on the care of people living with dementia.
From 2015 to 2024, Walaszek was vice chair for education and faculty development in the Department of Psychiatry. In this position, he led the advancement of faculty educational activities, mentorship and oversight procedures, faculty review and promotion processes and more. He also served as director of psychiatry residency training from 2004 to 2021.
Among other honors, Walaszek has earned the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Parker Palmer Courage to Teach Award and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
