Clinical rotations throughout Wisconsin offer students hands-on learning opportunities in a wide variety of settings.
Statewide Campus Locations
Hundreds of physicians throughout the state volunteer their time and expertise by serving as community faculty and mentors to students in the MD program. Throughout their training, medical students have educational experiences with community faculty at hospitals and clinics throughout Wisconsin. In keeping with the Wisconsin Idea, we build connections with colleagues, communities and partners throughout the state.
During Phase 1 of medical school, students at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health start to develop their doctoring skills during a three-semester longitudinal experience in outpatient clinics in Madison and surrounding counties.
During Phases 2 and 3, medical students receive clinical training in rotations not only at Madison sites, but also in La Crosse, Marshfield, Milwaukee and other Wisconsin communities.
Statewide partnerships are a hallmark of two of our programs that are addressing the need for physicians who practice in medically underserved rural and urban communities. Students in the Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH) program gain experience in hospitals and community clinics in the Milwaukee area, and students in the Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM) receive training through regional medical centers based in Green Bay, Marshfield and La Crosse.
Some students also choose to pursue a Master of Public Health degree, working with public health practitioners during their one-year program with field experiences.
Advocate Aurora Health/Eastern Academic Campus
A merger between Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health has created Advocate Health as the third-largest not-for-profit, integrated health care system in the United States, serving more than five million patients each year. Our longstanding education affiliation, initially established with Aurora Health Care, and our school’s Advocate Aurora Health/Eastern Academic Campus continue to be recognized by Advocate Health.
Aurora has more than 300 teaching faculty who teach medical students in clinical settings and assist with community health projects in the Milwaukee area. Students on rotations also have opportunities to train and provide care for medically underserved populations through sites such as Bread of Healing Clinic and Aurora Walker’s Point Community Clinic.
Aurora Health Care is a partner in our Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH) program, and with its association with Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, is a partner in our Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM).

Marshfield Clinic/Northern Academic Campus
Marshfield Clinic, based in central Wisconsin, is the largest private group medical practice in Wisconsin, with more than 700 physicians practicing in more than 80 specialties.
Medical students on rotations through Marshfield Clinic have opportunities in specialties such as gynecology, psychiatry, surgery and primary care.
In 2009, Marshfield Clinic became the first host site for medical students in our Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM), and has continued to serve as a teaching site since then.
