Jeff Hartman is an assistant professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, as well as an instructor role in the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics orthopedic residency program. He teaches Clinical Medicine I and II (PT 664 and PT 665), Psychosocial Aspects of Health Care (PT 540), Medical Ethics, Jurisprudence and Health Care Regulations (PT 542), and Principles of Professional Practice and Administration (PT 512). He has a clinic appointment at University Health Services.

Hartman’s clinical career has been primarily in the outpatient orthopedics, including a five-year stint in a Level-I trauma center in Indianapolis. He has extensive global health experience that includes serving as a clinician, administrator, researcher and educator with various organizations in 10 different countries. Hartman was the stateside director of operations for the Hillside Clinic in Belize and helped found a community-based rehabilitation program that currently serves as an education center for students from around the world, including the UW Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

His research focuses on global and community health and development and global health education. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and conduct research in Belize in 2020. Hartman has been a dedicated member and leader within the American Physical Therapy Association’s Global Health Special Interest Group since 2003 and currently serves on the organization’s executive committee.

Hartman graduated from the University of Evansville with a master’s degree in physical therapy. He earned his doctorate in physical therapy from the University of St. Augustine with an emphasis in manual therapy. In addition to his physical therapy training, he received a master of public health degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and a global health certificate from the UW–Madison Global Health Institute.
