MGCS Mission

The Master of Genetic Counselor Studies (MGCS) program prepares graduates to be competent and compassionate genetic counselors who will successfully enter the genetic counseling workforce and be lifelong learners and leaders in the field.

Our rigorous, comprehensive curriculum includes:

  • A diverse clinical experience that fosters interprofessional relationships
  • Relevant research opportunities that encourage critical thinking and contribute to the knowledge base of the profession
  • An environment that promotes socially responsible practice

Socially Responsible Practice

As a program in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, MGCS values engaging in a socially responsible practice as reflected in our mission statement and strategic plan. We remain steadfast in our commitment to dismantling systemic barriers and advancing genetic counseling through ongoing evaluation and enhancement of our curriculum, prioritizing societal well-being in tandem with patient care, all while fostering a supportive program culture that promotes social impact and belonging.

Accreditation

The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) and with the first class of genetic counselors starting in 1976, is one of the most experienced programs in the United States.
