MGCS-MPH

The Master of Genetic Counselor Studies-Master of Public Health (MGCS-MPH) dual degree program is designed to prepare future genetic counselors to successfully address complex health issues on an individual and population basis. MGCS-MPH students gain foundational knowledge and skills in genetics, and in the science and practice of public health.

The MGCS-MPH program allows students to complete both degrees in three years. This includes a first year in the MPH program, followed by two years in the MGCS program. Dual degree students complete an Applied Practice Experience (APEX) for their MPH during the summer after their MPH year. As part of the MGCS program, students complete a required research project, with a public health focus, and include faculty from both programs on their study team. This allows for a longitudinal experience through the three years in the dual degree program.

The UW School of Medicine and Public Health MGCS-MPH dual degree program requires that students are reviewed for admission by each program separately. Applicants need to be accepted by both programs for dual degree admission.

Applicants interested in the MGCS-MPH dual degree indicate their interest on the MGCS application and submit an additional personal statement explaining their interest in public health. A separate track is available in the National Matching Service ranking system. Admitted applicants defer their admission to the MGCS program for one year to complete their MPH year. In year two, dual degree students start the MGCS program and begin completing the 21-month MGCS curriculum.
