Ryan Tsuchida, MD
Ryan Tsuchida, MD, assistant professor in the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine and assistant dean for multicultural affairs for health professions learners at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, provides leadership, vision and oversight to enhance social impact and belonging efforts for the school’s five health professions degree programs. He leads the school’s student mistreatment process and chairs the school’s Student Mistreatment Triage Committee. In addition, he oversees the MD community service programs, including the school’s student-run free clinic.
Dr. Tsuchida serves as a faculty mentor to medical students through the school’s Building Equitable Access to Mentorship (BEAM) program and is funded by the American Medical Association to provide International Coaching Federation-certified coaches to support medical students as they transition to residency. He also represents the school in leadership roles within the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, as President of the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine, and the Association of American Medical Colleges, as a Council of Faculty and Academic Societies representative.
His research, clinical service and excellence in advancing social impact and belonging have earned numerous accolades. He is the recipient of several awards, including UW Health’s Rising Star Leadership Award, the Madison365 Wisconsin’s Most Influential Asian American Leaders, the Dr. Arno Kumagai Award for Excellence in Institutional Change to Promote Health Equity, Social Justice and Compassionate Care awarded by the University of Michigan Student Diversity Council; the Outstanding Future Academician Award from the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine, part of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine; and the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Award for Excellence in Leadership and Service.
Tsuchida completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Michigan, where he served as chief resident during his fourth year.
