All Master of Public Health (MPH) students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison complete a 240 hour, six-credit Applied Practice Experience (APEX) in a community-based public health setting. During this experience, students apply skills and knowledge from didactic courses to attain competencies aligned with students’ educational and professional goals.

Students will complete their APEX in a community setting such as a local public health agency, a community non-profit, a public or private school, or a governmental agency. The APEX activities will be designed to benefit both the site and the student.

Towards the end of the program, students complete a required non-credit based Integrative Learning Experience (ILE). Completion of the ILE includes a practice-based written product centered on the APEX, participation in a poster session, and a final portfolio review to demonstrate the attainment of the Program’s competencies throughout their time in the MPH Program.
